How to Prepare for Your Root Canal

If you’re about to undergo endodontic surgery, also known as a root canal, there’s no need to be intimidated. Although it may have gotten a bad reputation in the past, modern dental techniques have made this procedure fast, efficient, and virtually painless. In fact, it’s the ideal way to treat a diseased or rotted tooth.

At Media Dental Care, we not only provide effective and reliable cosmetic dentistry to the Swarthmore area, but we offer root canal treatments as well. We feature a staff of friendly and experienced dental experts, all of whom are extremely gentle when it comes to performing endodontic procedures. We want you to be 100% comfortable during your upcoming appointment.

With a few tips on how to prepare for this procedure, you can be ready and even look forward to getting the proper treatment for your infected or damaged tooth. Here are a few things you can do before your appointment:

  1. Ask About Antibiotics

If your tooth is infected or rotted already, then you’re likely in pain. However, to mitigate this discomfort, you can ask your dentist to prescribe you an antibiotic. This can help clear the tooth from infection, keep the pain at a minimum, and speed up recovery.

  1. Take an NSAID Before the Procedure

By taking a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug like ibuprofen before your procedure, you can reduce swelling that may be present and make the treatment more comfortable. However, you should always ask your dentist before taking any medication before an appointment.

  1. Don’t Smoke or Drink Alcohol

By avoiding these products for 24 hours before your treatment, you can lessen the chance of a long recovery period. Additionally, you should refrain from smoking or drinking alcohol for 72 hours following the procedure.

  1. Eat a Nutritious Meal

You should eat something filling and satisfying before your root canal appointment. If your mouth is numbed for the treatment, you won’t be able to eat for several hours. Only soft foods are recommended for the days immediately following recovery, so nourish your body with a proper meal.

At Media Dental Care, we’re dedicated to providing you with the most comfortable root canal treatment possible, all in a relaxed environment. By following these tips, you’ll be ready to improve your smile and enhance your oral health.
